What snacks are allowed on the South Beach diet?
Question: I do have a couple of questions for you about the beginning stages of South Beach. What suggestions do you have for snacks? Is sugar free jello OK? And I know you can't have any fruit in the beginning. So nuts and cheese are kind of it for snacks? They are both so high in calories. What do you think?
Thanks,
K.
Hello K,
Sugar free jello is definitely allowed at any time - yeah!
The purpose of Phase 1 of SB is to break the carb addiction...so that's why it's so restrictive. I wouldn't worry too much about counting calories unitl you get to phase 2. (I was able to lose weight on phase 1 without counting calories.)
For snacks other than cheese and nuts, here are some ideas:
any of the "Free" veggies in unlimited quantities.
- celery with cream cheese
- lean lunchmeat such as turkey, wrapped in a lettuce leaf. spread a little flavored cream cheese on it.
- veggies with ranch dip. i love brocolli and red peppers!
- ricotta cheese 'dessert' (if you like ricotta, I'll send you the recipe)
- if you like lima beans, try Edamame. you just microwave a handful of them for a minute, and they are a yummy healthy snack.
- In the evenings, to stop the urge to munch, try decaff hot tea with splenda or equal in it.
- cottage cheese is a good choice, as it's not so high calorie.
- eggs...there so many ways to eat eggs. Only 70 calories per egg. Keep some hard boiled eggs handy. Even deviled eggs are okay (skip the relish). An omelette with cheese is great! Or, skip the cheese and stir fry some red peppers, mushrooms, and/or onions to go with your omellete. Or make scrambled eggs with a teaspoon of ranch dressing mixed in. My daughter loves an omellette made with Salsa as the filling. Try tapinade, or cooked spinach with feta cheese. One last idea...an omellette made with a teaspoon of pizza sauce and mozzerellla cheese tastes almost as good as pizza! I don't have cholesteral problems, so I don't worry about eating too many eggs.
- sugar free fudge pops (made by popsicle) are only about 40 caloires each. You could eat 2 of those per day.
- sugar free hot cocoa is 50 caloires. You could splurge on one of those per day.
Here is a link the SB rules again. Here is an exact SB menu plan, if you prefer to follow that.
Good luck! Keep me posted. Carol
