Is Low Carb Trend a Rip-Off?A news story appeared on CNN.com today with the headline "Experts slam low-carb trend as rip-off". Is low carb a rip-off?I do believe many of the new low carb products are a rip-off. They are loaded with saturated fats, partially hydrogentated oils and calories. Many are also loaded with poly-ol sugars (lactitol, maltitol, etc.) that metabolize slowly (thus not causing a rise in blood sugar levels). These poly-ols often cause bloating and diarrhea. These new low carb foods are not heathly, and should be avoided or only consumed in very limited quantities. On the other hand, many of the low carb products are good. For example, I like the Mueller's reduced carb pasta. They have cut the carbs in half by adding a bunch of fiber to them. That's great! Bottom line - is to read the nutrition facts label on every thing you buy and count calories! I do firmly believe that eating fewer carbs, especially cutting out sugar and refined foods, results in less hunger and cravings. I follow the South Beach diet, which isn't strictly low carb. It is healthy carb diet. It encourages eating a balance of healthy carbs from fruits, vegetables and whole grain sources; healthy proteins from low fat meats and cheeses; and healthy fats from nuts and seeds. I feel so much better while eating this way! TIP: in order to lose weight on the south beach diet, I find that I have to count calories too. Read my whole diet story at www.bestdiettips.com.
