How do you count calories?Somebody emailed me and asked "How do you count calories? Do you look them up in a book or website?"Good question about counting calories. I look them up in several ways. * I have a book I keep in my kitchen, which has most everything in it. It's called the Complete Book of Food Counts. * If I can't find something in there, I'll try online at www.thecaloriecounter.com or just typing in "calories nachos" or "nutrition facts nachos" into google. (that's how I found out the movie theater nachos I ate one day were 1000 calories - ugh!). * if I eat out I'll look up the restaurant website. Many sites have nutrition info. * Sometimes when I'm cooking a recipe, like lasagna or low carb cheesecake, or whatever, I add up the calories for all the ingredients, to get the calories in the whole dish...then divide that by how many servings. * If I can't find it anywhere, then I have to just estimate. Sometimes I estimate if I'm being lazy, and don't feel like looking it up. I don't count calories for the low carb vegetables (i.e., the Weight Watchers "free veggies"). I use that calorie free spray butter on those. For salads, I aim to get 100 calories in the salad dressing and toppings such as cheese or nuts. This way, the salad is much more filling and satisfying. My favorite salad dressings are the Newman's Own Lighten Up line of dressings. They have healthy oils in them, but not too much that they are loaded with calories. Blog entry for: 2005-05-21 20:36:04 Home Page / Diet Info | Blog Directory |
