Be Selfish and Focus on YouA friend, who has young children and a full time job, wrote to me recently and said:That's SO impressive. [she was referring to me completing a half marathon) I need to get my butt in gear, but I somehow can't get out of this RUT I've been in...and then the added stress of finances, work, etc. tends to make me break out the chocolate...it's a vicious cycle I need to reak! Every morning I wake up and want to start a new and then some piece of pizza or candy or Captain Crunch is calling my name. I hope I can get a handle on this. I admire you so much and all that you've accomplished! You look younger than you did 10 years ago!!! I hope I can follow in your footsteps (well, maybe not the marathon part but at least the health and fitness). Here's what I wrote back: Thanks for the kudos. This exercise thing is my midlife crisis. Maybe it can be yours when you get to that age! I remember how hard it was when the kids were little....i felt so focused on them and forgot to take care of myself. Plus it's stressful to have the constant demands of little children (plus holding down a full time job, in your case!)...I used to eat as a way to relax and burn off stress or something. I remember pigging out on ice cream or cookies in the evenings after the kids were in bed thinking "Finally, a peaceful meal to myself". I wasn't even hungry. Someday, you'll be able to focus more on yourself and even be a little selfish sometimes by putting your needs first. Not all the time, but sometimes you have to. In the meantime, throw out the captain crunch and candy. When buying treats for the kids, buy only things that you don't like so you won't be tempted!
